Dallas has a better independent bookstore scene than most people realize. Oak Cliff alone has enough shops for a full afternoon crawl, and there are good stops in Deep Ellum, East Dallas and North Dallas too. Here are seven independent bookstores worth your time, grouped by neighborhood so you can plan a route.
Every name and address below was checked against at least two public sources, including the shops' own websites and local coverage from Axios Dallas. Hours change, especially around holidays and author events, so check before you head out.
Bishop Arts / North Oak Cliff
If you only have one afternoon, start here. Several of these shops are a short walk from each other.
The Wild Detectives
314 W Eighth St, Dallas, TX 75208 · Bishop Arts
Part bookstore, part bar and cafe, The Wild Detectives is the kind of place where you can buy a novel and then sit down with a coffee or a drink to start it. It sits in an old house on Eighth Street and regularly hosts readings and events. A good first stop on any Oak Cliff book crawl.
Whose Books
512 W Davis St, Dallas, TX 75208 · Bishop Arts
Whose Books recently moved to West Davis Street, close to the heart of Bishop Arts. If you saw an older address online (on Polk Street), that one is out of date. Worth a look if you are shopping for younger readers or want a shop with a clear point of view.
Lucky Dog Books (Oak Cliff)
911 W Jefferson Blvd, Dallas, TX 75208 · North Oak Cliff
A used bookstore on Jefferson Boulevard with the kind of stacks you can lose an hour in. Lucky Dog lists its hours as 11 am to 7 pm every day. It also has an East Dallas location (below), and its website keeps a handy list of Oak Cliff bookstores if you want to keep going.
South Dallas
Pan-African Connection
4466 S Marsalis Ave, Dallas, TX 75216 · South Oak Cliff
More than a bookstore, Pan-African Connection describes itself as a bookstore, art gallery and resource center. It is a longtime community anchor and a great place to find books by Black authors and about African and African American history and culture. It is a short drive from Bishop Arts, so it fits easily into an Oak Cliff loop.
Deep Ellum
Poets Bookshop
2649 Main St, Suite 160, Dallas, TX 75226 · Deep Ellum
A small independent shop that now calls Deep Ellum home. Poets closed its Bishop Arts store in April 2026 and moved to Main Street, so if you saw the old Bishop Avenue address online, that one is out of date. It pairs well with a stop at Deep Vellum Books nearby.
Deep Vellum Books
3000 Commerce St, Dallas, TX 75226 · Deep Ellum
Deep Vellum is both a nonprofit publisher and a bookstore, and the shop reflects that: expect a strong selection of literary fiction and books in translation, plus readings and events. The storefront lists its hours as noon to 6 pm every day.
East Dallas
Lucky Dog Books (East Dallas)
10534 Garland Rd, Dallas, TX 75218 · East Dallas, near White Rock Lake
The original Lucky Dog location, on Garland Road near White Rock Lake. Same daily hours as the Oak Cliff shop. A good pairing with a walk around the lake or a stop at the Arboretum.
North Dallas
Interabang Books
5600 W Lovers Ln, Suite 142, Dallas, TX 75209 · Lovers Lane / Inwood
Interabang (pronounced "in TERR uh bang") opened in 2017 at Preston and Royal. That building was destroyed by the October 2019 tornado, and the shop reopened in the Pavilion on Lovers Lane, between the Tollway and Inwood Road. It carries a hand-picked selection of new books and gifts for adults and kids, and it can order any book in print. Its posted hours are 10 am to 7 pm on weekdays, 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday, and noon to 6 pm on Sunday.
Tips for a Dallas bookstore crawl
- Do Oak Cliff on foot. The Wild Detectives and Whose Books are a few blocks apart in Bishop Arts. Lucky Dog on Jefferson is a short drive or a longer walk.
- Check hours before you go. Small shops close early for private events, adjust hours for holidays, and sometimes move. Whose Books is a good example of a shop whose old address still shows up in places.
- Call ahead for a specific title. If you want a particular book, call or message the shop first. Most independent stores will hold a copy or order it for you.
- Watch for Independent Bookstore Day. Each spring, Oak Cliff shops run an informal bookstore crawl. It is a fun way to see several shops in one day.
- Look at event calendars. Several of these shops host readings, signings and book clubs. Their websites and social accounts are the best place to see what is coming up.
Why shop independent?
Independent bookstores are run by people who read what they sell. Ask for a recommendation and you will usually get a real answer, not an algorithm. Buying from them also keeps money in the neighborhood and keeps these spaces open for readings, kids' story times and community events.
