Big pet chains carry a lot, but a good independent pet store gives you something they usually cannot: staff who know the food on their shelves and remember your dog's name. Dallas has a handful of locally owned shops like this, from a dog bakery on Lovers Lane to a 9,000-square-foot store with saltwater fish. Here are six worth a visit.
Every name and address below was checked against at least two public sources, including the shops' own websites, local press and pet directories. Hours change, so check before you go.
North Dallas and Preston Hollow
The Lucky Dog Barkery
8320 Preston Center Plaza, Dallas, TX · Preston Center
Founder Marsha Lindsey opened Lucky Dog Barkery in the Plaza at Preston Center in 2005, after leaving a corporate job to build what she calls "the kind of store your dog would build." The shop has stayed independent and single-location, turning down franchise offers along the way. It carries foods and supplements for many diets, plus a big selection of treats and dog accessories. In early 2026 it marked its 20th year, in its largest space yet.
Nauti Dog Barkery
5553 W Lovers Ln, Dallas, TX 75209 · Lovers Lane
An independently owned natural pet store, open since 2014, with an on-site pet bakery. Nauti Dog stocks frozen raw, lightly cooked and freeze-dried foods, holistic dry food, toys and chews, plus fresh-baked treats for dogs. It offers free delivery of food orders to parts of Dallas and buy-online, pickup-in-store. Reviewers often mention how much the staff know about pet nutrition. Its website lists hours of 10 am to 6 pm on weekdays, 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday and noon to 4 pm on Sunday.
Odyssey Pets

Family owned since 2006, Odyssey is a 9,000-square-foot store with more than 20 brands of premium pet food. It also offers grooming, boarding and daycare, and it has one of the bigger selections of freshwater fish, saltwater fish and corals in Dallas. It supports local rescues with adoption events, too. This is the stop if you have pets of more than one kind.

How to choose a pet store
- Ask questions about food. Good independent shops can explain the difference between raw, freeze-dried and dry foods and help you switch slowly. Bring your pet's current food bag so they can see what you use now.
- Ask about samples. Many small shops will give you a sample before you buy a big bag, especially for picky eaters.
- Look for services. Some stores offer delivery, dog washes, grooming or boarding. One shop that handles several needs can save you trips.
- Bring your dog. Most of these shops welcome leashed, friendly dogs. It is good socializing, and the staff can help with sizing for harnesses and collars.
- Ask about loyalty programs. Ask whether the shop has a frequent-buyer deal on food. Some independent stores do, and it can help close the price gap with big chains.
Why shop at an independent pet store?
Your pet's food is one of the most important choices you make for its health. Independent pet stores tend to carry fewer brands but know them better, and the people who own them are usually pet people first. They can spot problems, suggest changes and point you to a good vet, groomer or trainer nearby. And the money you spend stays in the neighborhood.
